What up everyone?! We have raised $10,000 already and I am so stoked, thank you all for what you are doing! Go shred some trails for me before it snows!
Really FDA approved cr3? They have approved the one part of the three part surgery intacs is approved yes but cr3 is still not here in the states, and if those work they might be able to use a process where they can Lazer off part of my cornea in my left eye to try and bring some sight back. it would be a little cheaper in canada but when you look at the cost of travel plus travel back for follow ups it comes out about the same. This whole thing would be a lot cheaper faster easier if they found it sooner and I did not have a paper thin cornea, Also if it ends up being cheaper it all goes into "the ride for nicks eyes fund" to help other riders who are having problems as well, no way would I ever pocket the money. thats freaking the worst thing ever are you on crack! you think pinkbike would let there be a scam like this on their site? get real
it's been in the usa first for a good 2 years, I was waiting for it in canada. I'm having it done nov. 4th it's costing me $3300/ per eye. but looks like it will be covered under lasik laser eye. intacs is an old method used before lasik was invested. Just these intacs are special because they have to fit around the cornea buldge
please find me a hospital where my medical insurance works on that, because so far there is nothing. I would be stoked if it cost less really I would, the only other clinics are in chicago and denver both clinics have done a mim amount of eyes and they dont do the cr3 and intacts together they wait months between them. Doctor Boxer does them together and he has seen a massive success rate for them, 2 other doctors have told me that I need a cornea transplant in my left eye doctor boxer thinks he can save it, Why is there so much hate I dont get it. I am not asking for free money, we will hook you up with good gear for a good cause
It's definestly a good cause. It needs more awareness. I'm just suprised that in the USA they claim to cost 20k, where in Canada where they just got approved, within under a year, they cost not as much.
Yes, try to stay away from the corneal transplant. However I'm not sure how bad Nick's condition is, your thinning edges on the cornea could be a hard procedure if thats your case. This wouldnt affect cost though.
My apologies if this sounded like an attack, I just wanted to share more information regarding the disease and I thought it was rediculous the cost in the USA, after i contemplated going to LA myself for the procedure and told it was the same price, however in USA funds.
Santacruz-collector, I am not sure how familiar you are with current political issues but Obama still hasn't sorted out Universal Health Care. If Nick says it is going to cost 20k then i am sure it costs 20k.
If you have ever gotten hurt or been injured in the States without health care you would realize how much it can cost.
Good luck Nick, Hope to see you riding this summer.
Yeah your right, I forgot the American medical system is all out of the individuals pocket. I recently learnt that each operation and Intac ring can cost a different price. Sicne Nick is having it done in LA, and his condition in his left eye will need more of a custom intact i'm sure the prices can get sky-rocketed easily. My apologies to Nick, I have contacted him personally and let him know what i meant by what I said. I was maily shocked to find someone else goign through the same thing around the same time as myself. It's definetly a rare disease, but it's nice to know someone else's story thats similar to my own.
Jersey already ordered. Im stoked to see my photo as the the cover for this article. This is one of the best causes I have ever supported. Check out my photo and fav it so maybe it can be POD and spread awareness
"I ride for Nick’s eyes campaign is LIVE. Update! As of 10/28 we have raised 7k of the 20k needed for the surgery. Nick and his wife Audrey will head to LA on 11/10 for the surgery. Thanks for supporting and spreading the word! info@demondirt.com" Demon Dirt Site
My apologies for the comments that seemed like an attack. The cost is different depending on the intac ring, who and where you go to have it done, and the country you live in. It's unfortunate that any treatment for this disease is all out of the patient's pocket. Nick has also said he will be donating any non-used funds to other bikers that are suffering with the same disease.
I would like to thank Nick personally for his effort providing awarness. Thank you Nick.
Ya I understand I know you not hating its a pretty advanced case I went from seeing fine to my eye being so bad that my brain has shut it off on the left side, and there is a small mountain starting to form on the right one as well. They dont know why it came on so fast but if it destroys my right like it has my left i am kinda screwed, If you need help funding your surgery let me know! I never thought I would ever have raised this much money, I would be stoked to put some up for your surgery too! really it would be my honor to help another rider out that why we started this thing!!!
Thats very generous of you. However I'll be alright with funding. I'd feel bad receiving, we should get together however and create some way of awareness and fund to fight kerateconus, That would be soemthing i would be so proud of, and i can tell you would be too.
It sounds to me that yours is worse then mine. Yours happened faster, and more vision loss. I hope the best for you, and hit me up on msg. maybe we can brainstorm about soemthing or i can help out in anyway. To me this is my cancer awareness, kerateconus sucks.
just to anyone who has even the slightest thought this is a scam. do you really, REALLY think ALL those companies would out that much gear just to help nick, like honestly people i know the world has alot of bad people in it, but i think the main reason this has gotten so big is when people watched the first video, it touched them, it conveyed true emotion, you could see and feel how effected he was by this news. so anyone who thinks this is a scam, get your head out of your ass.
^^^^Good point! People who think this is a scam is definitely wrong. This is going to such a great cause and it is good to see it is going to change someone's life!
Or many people's life, Nick's awarness will provide many other's with support, since he said any money not used will be kept for other bikers going through the same situation. Thanks for your hard work Nick, means a lot to see someone stand strong and spead awareness with this unfortunate disease.
yes i am going to the best doctor in the my country because when you call other clinics the they have done a min amount of eyes like in the 20 and 30's, doc boxer is the one who brought it to the usa when you take your bike into the shop to get a fork rebuild do you take it to the shop you know can fix it or do you take it to the shop you hope can fix it?
Yes, you'll be in good hands.. I assume your nick?
THe doctor i'm going to this thursday to have it done has only done 1 in western canada. He's a smart guy and I trust him. Dr Boxer in the USA is the best and has done CR3 and Intacs long enough to mostly likely be a perfectionist.
Good luck Nick and hoefully it turns out you get 20/20 vision or better!
Good luck to you too man. I just had my retina reattached and life is a little hard right now... Both of you try and think positive, keep your chin up and "see" the both of you next spring on the trails! richie...
Hell yeah everyone. Wish I could have ordered more than a shirt, but every little bit helps. Mountain bikers really are a rad community of folks. Awesome to see everyone pull together to help a bro.
Thanks for the update Nick!! Thrilled the fundraiser is going so well!!! And so stoked on you heading to AT's Showdown, I know the guys will be thrilled to have you there!! Enjoy!!
not sure if it has been answered but any chance we can get a rough idea of what sort of target money wise we are trying to achieve here? kinda adds more incentive when you know wat you are trying to reach. By the way great cause and really awesome to see the biking community coming together.. good luck!
i really hope you get better i never felt so sad whilst watching a video before il try my best to do my part to getting your eyes fixed its allways sad when you hear of bad happening to someone else no matter if you know them or not
MTB-2-BMX, Nick has a rare condition called Kerateconus. It's when the cornea buldges out in a mountain shape triangle. It's classified as a generic disease as per current study's. The cause and cure are unknown, but recent treatments have just recently come that are newly approved, but all funding is out of the patient’s pocket. If left untreated, the patient’s eye sight keeps deminishing until they go blind. It's a disease that doesn’t receive mass amount of study and is mostly due to lacks of funding, since it only affects a small amount of the population.(affects less than 200,000 people in the US population).
Nick has done a wonderful job of making this disease known to the biking community. It's a serious disease that can leave young adults blind for the rest of their life. Kerateconus mainly starts in young adults and then continues to worsen. The longer the individual waits to have the procedure done, the less improved vision there will be. It’s best to have it done ASAP, vision means a lot. This cause means a lot also.
The procedure is $3300 CDN per eye... looks like he has enough Oh, and its FDA approved in USA for a ling time, Just came FDA approved in Canada just recently. I think most medical plans won't cover the procedure, but could fall under lasik if you have a good coverage plan.
So nick, you have enough.. no need to pocket the rest of the $
Having met the guy he doesn't seem like the kind of dude to scam anyone. If he says he need 20k, it is prolly gonna cost 20k. Not too cool to kick a guy while he's down or make accusations you can't back up.
The cause for keratoconus is unknown. It's a said to be a genetic disease. It causes the cornea to bulge out into a cone shape which distorts the vision. The vision will constantly worsen untill you go bling. Most likely would take many years for this to happen (5-30).
Treatments WHICH ARE FDA APPROVED are:
1. cross-linking - it's a UV ray thats used to age the eye ball and stops the progression of the disease. 2. Intacts - 2 small half rings that are inserted in the eye which pushes the cornea more flat and holds it there so the vision is vastly improved. You can use cross-linking over that to make sure the disease stops to worsen, even though the intacs will stop it anyways. 3. If al else fails, you get a corneal transplant. Which you try to stay away from due to long recovery time and the eye is weak now.
